The Illuminator - Brenda Rickman Vantrease
Historical Novel set in late 14th century England. Dark and rich with touches of light, like a painting dulled by candlesmoke.
Real personages cross the stage forcing the underlying action, but the main players are appropriately fictional. Not overly in awe of only high-born folk, the most interesting characters are actually the peasants whose descendants would become the bulk of the American population.
Like all historical fiction, in the end you know everyone is either going to die or wander off the reproduce. While appearing to be a first novel, it still is a solid piece of work.
